Target Heart Rate Calculator
Target heart rate (THR), or training heart rate, is a desired range of heart rate reached during aerobic exercise which enables one's heart and lungs to receive the most benefit from a workout. This theoretical range varies based on one's physical condition, age, and previous training.
Your target heart rate is not one rate but a range of rates (beats per minute, or bpm), expressed as percentages of your maximum heart rate. For most healthy people, the American Council of Sports Medicine recommends an exercise target heart rate ranging from 60% to 85% of your maximum heart rate, which is normally calculated as the number 220 minus your age.

Taking Your Pulse
Take your pulse regularly as you exercise and compare it to your target heart rate. An easy way to take your pulse is to count your heartbeats for 10 seconds and then multiply this number by 6 to get your beats per minute, or bpm.
There are a number of ways to feel your pulse - you can place your fingers lightly but firmly over the inside of your wrist, or on your neck just below the angle of your jaw. You can also place your palm over your heart and count the number of beats that you feel.
